What Are Summer Bees?

Most honey bees do not live for the same amount of time.

A worker bee born during the busy summer season usually lives only about 4 to 6 weeks. A worker bee born later in the year may live for several months.

This is why beekeepers sometimes talk about summer bees and winter bees.

So, what are summer bees?

Summer bees are worker honey bees produced during the colony's active season. They are part of the large, fast-moving workforce that keeps the hive growing, fed, and productive during spring and summer.

Their lives are short, but the work they do is essential.

A Summer Bee Does Not Start Out as a Forager

One common misunderstanding is that every worker bee spends its life flying from flower to flower.

It does not.

A worker bee usually begins with jobs inside the hive. As it gets older, its role changes.

A healthy summer colony does not depend on individual bees living a long time.

It depends on continuous replacement.

While older workers are collecting food outside the hive, the queen is laying eggs and younger bees are developing inside the brood area.

The cycle continues:

Egg → Larva → Pupa → Adult worker → Hive worker → Forager

By the time older summer bees begin to disappear, younger workers should be ready to take their place.

How Are Summer Bees Different From Winter Bees?
